I swear to God, if I hear that stupid fucking chipmunk voice one more time I’m going to frisbee my phone into the Delaware River.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, first of all, lucky you. I’m talking about that high-pitched squeaky TikTok voice people slap onto every goddamn video now. It’s fucking everywhere, from Instagram reels to TikTok to YouTube Shorts. Every video of somebody’s dog, cat, boyfriend, baby, sandwich, or houseplant comes with that same helium huffing audio filter.
“OH MAH GAAWWWWD LOOK AT HIIIIIIMMMM!”
Bitch shut the fuck up.
My girlfriend doomscrolls Instagram constantly, which means I don’t even need to open the app myself to suffer through this shit. I’ll be sitting there trying to relax after work watching some Needy Girl Overdose or Yowayowa Sensei and suddenly from the other side of the room I hear what sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks being tortured in a fucking blender.
Every video sounds the same too. It’s always some completely normal thing being treated like it’s the funniest thing the dipshit recording it has ever witnessed.
A dog sneezes, a guy drops a fork, toddler falls over. Doesn’t matter, cue that damn chipmunk voice screaming like somebody just discovered fire for the first time.
People genuinely think this is enhancing the video somehow, and I’m not sure why. It doesn’t make it funnier or more entertaining, it just makes the person recording it sound mentally ill.
And before someone says “ok boomer” and tells me I’m just getting old, let me stop you right there.
I’ve always hated this voice. Even back in the old internet days I couldn’t stand it. Remember Foamy the Squirrel from that Flash toon Neurotically Yours? Every edgy little retard online acted like that shit was the peak of comedy. Meanwhile I’m sitting there wondering why this squirrel sounds like he inhaled an entire Party City helium tank.
Yes, I know he was a squirrel. I got the joke, I just didn’t want it.
The only ones who get a pass are Alvin and the Chipmunks because 1) they’re actual fucking chipmunks, and 2) Chipmunks Christmas is and will forever be a holiday staple in this house, fuck all the haters. If you’re a grown man pretending to be cartoon rodents singing Christmas songs, then, and only then, do you get a pass on the chipmunk voice.
But if you’re some 28 year old influencer named Kayleigh filming your boyfriend tripping over a garden hose, you can fuck right the fuck off with that fucking voice. Fuck.
Social media already feels like psychological warfare. Every app is basically designed to blast your brain with as much overstimulating bullshit as possible, between the loud music, the fast cuts, annoying ass captions bouncing all over the screen, and everybody talking at the top of their lungs all the time. The chipmunk voice is just the final form of this garbage. This entire generation’s attention spans are so fried that apparently normal human speech isn’t stimulating enough anymore. Now everything has to sound like a cocaine-addicted squirrel.
We should start treating this like noise pollution. We already regulate leaf blowers and car alarms (unless of course you live in Philly, in which case nobody gives a fuck if a car alarm goes off for so long that it actually kills the battery). Let’s apply that same logic to social media.
If you upload a video using the chipmunk voice filter, the app should automatically suspend your account for 48 hours and force you to watch a documentary about shame. Second offense, and your phone explodes in your pocket. I don’t even have an Instagram or TikTok, but I would create them just to police this shit for free harder than a 4chan janny. I’d be responsible for so many phones blowing up that I’d be like the Unabomber of Instagram reels.
If I have to hear “OH MAH GAAWWWWD” one more fucking time while somebody records their golden retriever blinking, I’m going to record me putting my foot up some TikTokker’s ass.
