Gen Z Is Really Fucking Weird About Age Gaps

Gen Z is really fucking weird about age gaps in relationships.

Recently I read a story about a guy who went to meet up with a girl he was talking to online. Except when he got there, he got jumped by a bunch of guys and accused of being a groomer.

The reason?

He was 21 and the girl was 18.

What the fuck?

Apparently this is a generational thing. Gen Z treats age disparity in relationships like some kind of automatic power imbalance whenever somebody under 25 is involved. A 30-year-old banging a 22-year-old? He might as well be Richard Steve Goldberg.

I don’t know when this became a thing. When I was younger, if an adult wanted to date or hook up with another adult, nobody really gave that much of a shit unless the age difference was completely ridiculous. Hell, when I was 18 I dated a 15 year old, and nobody thought anything of it, her parents included. I even went to her school dances, and half her friends were dating guys my age or older.

I wonder what this generation would have thought about my fling with a married woman who was more than twice my age. I was 20, she was 42, and had a daughter who was older than me.

According to Gen Z’s fucked up logic, apparently I’m a victim.

I certainly didn’t feel like a victim at the time. I knew exactly what I was doing and was more than happy to be doing it. Nobody tricked me or groomed me. I was a grown-ass man hooking up with an older woman because I wanted to hook up with an older woman.

Now I’m almost 40. My current girlfriend is almost 50. We’ve been happily together for 12 years now. Thankfully we’re both over 30, so I guess that means we’re safe from Gen Z’s accusations of predation and power imbalances. Had we met a few years earlier, maybe somebody on Reddit would be telling me I was being abused. I just can’t stop being victimized by these older women, can I?

I’ve actually seen a growing number of people on sites like Reddit calling for laws to dictate how big an age gap can be between two adults. Let me just say right now, if anyone ever tries to arrest me or my girlfriend because we’re nine years apart in age, they’d better be sending in SEAL Team Six to do it. FAFO.

The strangest part of this whole thing is that these same people seem perfectly comfortable with the idea that an 18-year-old is old enough to vote.

Just think about that for a second. An 18-year-old is mentally developed enough to help choose who runs the country, but not mentally developed enough to choose who they have sex with?

You can’t have it both ways here. If somebody isn’t capable of deciding whether they want to fuck a 25-year-old, why the hell should they be capable of helping decide who becomes president? Either an 18-year-old is an adult or they’re not.

I’m not saying I don’t sometimes find big age gaps weird. If I see a 50-year-old guy banging an 18-year-old, yeah, I’m probably going to think it’s a little fucking weird. I’d probably wonder what a 50-year-old and an 18-year-old even have to talk about, then assume she’s just banging him for his money.

But they’re still two adults having consensual sex. There’s a big difference between saying “That’s weird” and saying “That should be illegal.”

People are allowed to make decisions you wouldn’t personally make. That’s part of being an adult. Sometimes those decisions are stupid. Sometimes the relationship blows up. Sometimes the 22-year-old dates the 35-year-old and they’re perfectly happy together. It’s none of my business.

Like I’m going to let the generation that was raised by social media and still somehow has zero social skills tell me anything about how relationships are supposed to work.

You can fuck right off.

You mean your life isn’t a Netflix show to be watched and commented on? I give it one out of five stars.
